Fortification of Milk

Vitamin A deficiency is one of the major nutritional problems in our country. This deficiency may lead to blindness and other disorders like skin problems, hair loss, etc., which can be prevented if required quantity of this Vitamin can be made available through the daily dietary otherwise.

Normally 100 gms of buffalo milk contains about 160 I.U and 100. gms of Cows milk contains around 175 I.U of Vitamin A. Vitamin A content in milk supplied through dairies is reduced to a great extent due to the removal of fat or addition of skimmed milk powder during processing. Its content in toned milk is around 60 I.U/ 100 gms. In double toned milk it is about 36 I.U/100g.m and in standardized milk it is around 90 I.U per 100gm . The Vitamin A levels in the milk may also vary during the winter when the grazing of cattle is less.

Keeping this in view, the Department of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India has felt the necessity to fortify the dairy milk with Vitamin A at a concentration of 2000 I.U per litre of milk.

The entire Fortification program as indicated above could be sponsored by the Department of Women and Child Development for a period of three years and there after the collaborating dairies would be obligated to bear the cost of fortification.

This program was started with the Mother Dairy, Delhi, since February 1980 on the terms and conditions mentioned above. The Govt. of India met the expenditure for Mother Dairy, Delhi, up to January 1993 and there after they are continuing this program on their own without having any financial assistance from the Govt. At present, this scheme is being implemented by 54 dairies with a capacity of fortification of about 25,00,000 litres of milk per day.
